What are low-power FM (LPFM) radio stations?

• They’re an FCC-designated class of stations broadcasting at 100 watts or less, owned and operated by nonprofit organizations or coalitions, and run by mainly volunteer staff, both on the air and behind the scenes.
• Unlike for-profit commercial stations, which are usually owned by out-of-town media conglomerates, and funded through ads, LPFM stations are commercial-free and supported by donations, sponsorships, underwriting and grants.
• LPFM stations run programs that are community-specific and locally produced. Some also broadcast programs of local interest from nonprofit syndication services like National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Radio Exchange (PRX).
